Death

On the early morning of October 16, 2007, around 6.30 am, Proeski was killed in a car accident on the Zagreb–Lipovac highway near Nova Gradiška, Croatia. He was a passenger along with his manager Ljiljana Petrović in a Volkswagen Touareg driven by Gjorgji Gjorgjievski. It was reported the Touareg's airbags failed to activate after it crashed into the back of a lorry and then into a midway fence, killing Proeski instantly although the lorry was not damaged at all. Of the other two passengers, only the driver suffered serious injuries (head trauma).
Proeski's body arrived at midnight in Skopje by helicopter, and was transported by car to his home town Krusevo. Grieving citizens gathered to pay their last respects at the airport and also in Skopje's city square. October 17 was pronounced a national day of mourning in Macedonia. The three days following his death were pronounced days of mourning in the City of Krusevo. He was called "Elvis Presley of the Balkans" by the BBC.
After his death, the government of the Republic of Macedonia, gave him the title "Honorable citizen of Macedonia".
It has been recently confirmed that the funeral will be held at 1pm on 17 October 2007 in his native home town of Krusevo. It has been reported that Karolina Goceva and other singers will be present at the funeral. Delegations from all over the country attended the funeral, including the prime minister Nikola Gruevski, the army, the national guard, Red Cross, the Macedonian Orthodox Church, and high-ranking officials, members of the Parliament, USAID, many diplomats, foundations, including the president of Parliament Mr. Ljubisha Georgievski. He was officialy burried in 14:15 and received the posthumous title.
During the burrial, many people felt a great sorrow and pain. For the people of Krusevo and Macedonia, Tose Proeski will be remarked for his trademark phrase "Ve sakam site." ( I love you all), which he said in many occasions, and he will be regarded as one of the most prominent pop singers in Balkan's pop history.
